Horner expected to be ready soon for Iowa

Posted Sep 8, 2002

6-3 freshman guard Jeff Horner of Mason City (IA) High is expected to be ready for the start of the season after undergoing surgery and having a screw inserted in his fifth metatarsal (pinky toe) to repair a stress fracture in his right foot. He had played most of the summer in pain and still was able to be named MVP of Prime Time League, a summer league in Iowa and lead the Martin Brother Select AAU to a fourth place finish in the 19 and under Nationals in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Horner averaged 31.2 points and 6.8 assists per game and was College Basketball News’ choice for Player of the Year in Iowa. Horner is expected to start for the Hawkeyes this upcoming season and committed to Iowa as a freshman.

He was fitted for a brace to be placed in his right shoe. His father told me today that they are expecting that to come off in a week. Horner has been lifting weights and is expected to be ready for the start of practice in October.
